Ear Mites in Cats — Recognition, Treatment, and Prevention
Hello dear friends of Los Gatitos de Marlies! 🐱 Here in sunny Talamanca, Costa Rica, our sanctuary cats enjoy warm days and plenty of love. But the tropical climate also brings some tiny, unwelcome visitors — ear mites. Today we want to share what every cat lover should know about these pesky little creatures.
What are ear mites?
Ear mites are tiny parasites that live inside a cat's ear canal. They are very contagious and spread easily between cats, especially those living close together. Here at the sanctuary, we see them often in cats that arrive from the streets.
How to recognize ear mites
The most common signs include:
- Scratching: Your cat scratches its ears a lot or shakes its head frequently.
- Dark discharge: You may see dark, coffee-ground-like dirt inside the ears.
- Bad smell: The ears may smell unpleasant.
- Redness: The inside of the ear looks red or irritated.
- Sensitivity: Your cat may cry or pull away when you touch its ears.
If left untreated, ear mites can cause painful infections and even damage the eardrum.
Treatment
The good news is that ear mites are very treatable! A veterinarian can prescribe special ear drops or topical medications that kill the mites. Treatment usually needs to be repeated because it kills adult mites but not their eggs. It's also important to clean the ears gently before applying medication. Please never use home remedies without asking a vet — a cat's ears are delicate!
At Los Gatitos de Marlies, every new arrival gets a full health check, including their ears. With your kind donations, we can provide the medications our rescued cats need.
Prevention
To keep ear mites away:
- Check your cat's ears regularly.
- Keep up with flea and parasite prevention treatments.
- Clean bedding and living areas often.
- Isolate new cats until they have a vet check.
Together we care
