FIV: Understanding and Loving Our Special Cats
At Los Gatitos de Marlies, we often meet cats that test positive for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus, or FIV. While a diagnosis might sound scary, it is important to know that these cats can live long, happy, and fulfilling lives.
What is FIV?
FIV is a viral infection that affects a cat's immune system, making them more susceptible to other infections. It is primarily spread through deep bite wounds during territorial fights. Once a cat is indoors and safe, the risk of spreading the virus is virtually non-existent.
Symptoms and Care
Many FIV+ cats show no symptoms for years. If symptoms do appear, they often include dental issues, recurring infections, or weight loss. Care for an FIV+ cat is simple: keep them indoors, provide a high-quality diet, and ensure regular veterinary check-ups to catch any issues early. Most importantly, they need plenty of love!
Living with an FIV+ Cat
Can FIV+ cats live with other cats? Yes! As long as the cats get along and there is no fighting, the risk of transmission is extremely low. At our sanctuary, we see these cats blossom when they are given the stability they deserve. They are just as playful, cuddly, and sweet as any other cat. Please consider opening your home to one of our special FIV+ residents!
