Understanding Feline Calicivirus: Protecting Your Furry Friends
At Los Gatitos de Marlies, we care deeply about the health of our residents here in Talamanca. Today, we want to share important information about feline calicivirus (FCV), a common respiratory illness that every cat parent should know about.
What is FCV?
Feline calicivirus is a highly contagious virus that affects cats' respiratory tracts and oral cavities. It is one of the most common causes of upper respiratory infections in cats.
Common Symptoms
Recognizing the signs early can help your cat recover faster. Watch out for:
- Sneezing and nasal congestion
- Drooling, often caused by painful ulcers in the mouth
- Lack of appetite due to discomfort
- Fever and lethargy
Prevention and Vaccination
The best way to protect your cat is through regular vaccination. The core vaccine for cats includes protection against FCV. While it may not prevent infection entirely, it significantly reduces the severity of symptoms. Keeping your cats indoors and maintaining a clean environment are also key to preventing exposure.
Home Care Tips
If your cat is diagnosed with FCV, don't panic! Most cats recover well with love and care.
- Keep them comfortable: Ensure they have a warm, quiet place to rest.
- Wipe the eyes and nose: Use a soft, damp cloth to keep their face clean.
- Entice them to eat: Since ulcers can make eating painful, try offering soft, slightly warmed, fragrant food.
- Hydration: Make sure fresh water is always available.
