Understanding FIV: Loving Life with an FIV+ Cat

At Los Gatitos de Marlies, we often meet cats that test positive for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). While the diagnosis can sound scary, we want to reassure our community: FIV+ cats are just as loving and wonderful as any other cat!

What is FIV?

FIV is a virus that affects a cat's immune system. It is most commonly spread through deep bite wounds during fights between cats. It cannot be transmitted to humans or other species. An FIV+ cat can live a long, healthy, and happy life, especially if kept indoors and provided with a stable home.

Symptoms and Care

Many FIV+ cats show no symptoms for years. When symptoms do appear, they often include gingivitis, recurring infections, or weight loss. Because their immune systems are a bit more sensitive, keeping them healthy is all about prevention.

Tips for caring for an FIV+ cat:

  • Keep them indoors: This prevents them from picking up outside infections and stops the spread of the virus to others.
  • High-quality nutrition: A healthy diet helps their immune system stay strong.
  • Regular vet visits: Early detection of any health issue is key to quick recovery.
  • Stress reduction: A calm, loving home environment makes a world of difference.

Living with an FIV+ cat is truly rewarding. They have the same need for belly rubs, purrs, and companionship as any other kitty. By choosing to adopt or sponsor an FIV+ cat, you are giving a deserving animal the chance to experience true love and safety. Thank you for your continued support of our sanctuary here in Talamanca!
