Understanding Feline Calicivirus: Protecting Your Furry Friends
At Los Gatitos de Marlies here in Talamanca, we are dedicated to the health and happiness of every cat that walks through our doors. Today, we want to talk about feline calicivirus (FCV), a common but manageable respiratory infection.
What is Feline Calicivirus?
FCV is a highly contagious virus that affects a cat's respiratory system and oral cavity. While it sounds scary, most cats recover fully with proper care.
Common Symptoms
- Sneezing and nasal congestion
- Oral ulcers (sores on the tongue or gums)
- Loss of appetite
- Lethargy
- Fever or drooling
Prevention and Care
The best way to protect your cat is through vaccination. While the vaccine may not prevent infection entirely, it significantly reduces the severity of the illness. At our sanctuary, we make sure every resident is vaccinated. If your cat shows symptoms, please contact your vet immediately. Keeping them hydrated, warm, and comfortable is essential. We often use soft, warm food to encourage them to eat when their mouths are sore.
Remember, patience and love are the best medicines for our feline friends!
