TNR: A Kind Path to Helping Street Cats in Talamanca

At Los Gatitos de Marlies, we often receive questions about the stray cats wandering through Talamanca. You may notice some cats with a small tip missing from their ear—this is the universal symbol of a cat that has been through a TNR program. But what exactly is TNR?

What is TNR?

TNR stands for Trap-Neuter-Return. It is the most humane and effective way to manage and stabilize community cat populations. We humanely trap the cats, take them to a trusted veterinarian to be spayed or neutered, and then return them to their original outdoor home.

Why is it so important?

• Population Control: Spaying and neutering prevent endless cycles of kittens being born into harsh street lives.
• Healthier Cats: Sterilized cats are less likely to roam far, fight for territory, or contract diseases.
• Peaceful Coexistence: TNR reduces nuisance behaviors like caterwauling and spraying, making the community a more peaceful place for both people and cats.

By supporting TNR, you are not just preventing overpopulation; you are showing compassion for animals who have no voice. These cats are vital members of our ecosystem, and they deserve to live their lives with dignity. Thank you for being part of our mission here in Costa Rica!
